The 10:10 campaign
PCAN is supporting the thousands of individuals and organisations which are uniting behind one simple idea: that by working together we can easily achieve a 10% cut in carbon emissions during 2010.
It’s called 10:10, and everyone can be a part of it. The good news is that Portsmouth City Council has signed up to it (even though they don’t expect 10% cuts this year)
What’s more, this organisation - 10:10 - is going to hit ALL rich countries with the same idea in 2010, so we will ALL be in it together.
The idea is that each of us cut 10% in 2010, and we invite 10 other people to do the same. If we all get 10 people to sign up and they sign up another 10 people on Friday, then by next Tuesday the whole planet will have signed up! Getting the Council on board is just a start – how many people in Portsmouth can we get to sign up?
Cutting 10% in one year is easily achievable and is in line with what scientists say we need right now. By signing up to 10:10 we’re not just promising to reduce our own emissions – we’re becoming part of an international drive in our homes, in our workplaces, our schools and our hospitals, our football clubs and universities, to become a low-carbon society.
How you could save your 10%
There are lots of ideas on the 10:10 website – these are just a few:
- Turn your heating down, use sweaters and insulate your house
- Save electricity, change your light bulbs and turn stuff off
- Cut your car mileage - use public transport, walk or cycle
- Fly less, holiday more
- Buy less. Rent, hire, recycle, re-use
- Buy local and organic food, eat less meat and dairy products
- Dump less
- Don’t waste food or water
