Recharge the Media 1-7 December Do you feel the media sometimes misses the point? Wish it was getting the urgency of climate change?  If you think the media could use some ‘recharging’ on the climate debate, join in to create a big debate in the media this December. Get the letters pages, opinion columns and airwaves buzzing with your views on climate change and the UK’s energy choices. Get your voice heard. Inspire others. Help shape the public agenda. Tell the media you care what this country is doing to tackle climate change at home. Call on our politicians to kick start the carbon clean up at home and show leadership on the world stage.  Speak up. Register NOW for the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition media action alerts from 1 – 7 December on www.rechargethemedia.org  They'll tell you how climate change is being covered in the media throughout the week and where you can influence the debate in newspapers, online, on the radio and in your local news.   Register NOW for the Stop Climate Chaos Recharge the Media action.

How does it work?

Sign up  to ‘Recharge the media’. Stop Climate Chaos will get in touch you once a week in the run-up to 1 December, with tips on getting your voice heard in the media.  Every day from 1-7 December, they’ll alert you to opportunities in the regional and national media to speak out on climate change and energy.  You then take as many or as few actions as you want. At the end of the week, that’s it for this Stop Climate Chaos Coalition action – you won’t receive any more alerts BUT you’ll have helped create a climate buzz and hopefully be energised to keep ‘recharging’ the public debate wherever you can.

The Climate Change Bill

The climate change bill third reading took place on Tuesday 28 October and looking back at what we hoped to achieve at the start of our lobbying campaign on the bill – the announcements made in parliament yesterday seem little short of miraculous.  The government has committed to an emissions reduction target of 80 per cent, with annual targets, and aviation & shipping emissions are included in the bill.  BUT it’s disappointing that carbon trading did not come up in the debate.  The bill is going back to the House of Lords on 17 November and we need to continue to put pressure on the government about this loophole. MP Alan Simpson’s amendment on carbon trading is supported in the House of Lords by the Labour Peer Lord David Puttnam, who in a speech on carbon trading said: “Is it really ‘needlessly expensive’ for us to adapt the way we live to these new and difficult circumstances? Or is it just politically and socially inconvenient, when it would be cheaper and more convenient to persuade an Indian or a Kenyan or a Brazilian to take the hit?” There’s still time to write to your MPs see http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ http://www.worlddevelopmentmovement.org/action/ The Power of Do

Climate Camp calls days of action against E.ON

Whilst some of us are focused on pressuring the government not to consent Kingsnorth, Climate Camp activists are sticking to their promise to make building Kingsnorth as difficult as possible for E.ON. They continue to confront the company at every turn, showing up at their offices in the UK and Germany and their stalls at student recruitment fairs.  Take action
You can join the Climate Camp’s 48 hours of action on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 of November, 2008.  On Friday you could visit the Coal Authority, E.ON offices, or UK Coal offices, to name but a few. On the Saturday you could take action at 2nd round FA Cup matches sponsored by E.ON. These actions will raise awareness about killer coal, and say loud and clear that campaigners won't stand for new coal - at Kingsnorth or anywhere else. For more information visit www.e-onf-off.org.uk- where a list of potential targets, action ideas and plenty of resources will follow shortly.

National Climate March

Chris Price has got support from his Union, Unison, to run a coach provided they can be reasonably sure the places will be booked. The cost would be £10 waged and £5 unwaged.  There should be a fair number of Unison members plus university groups but it would be really helpful if PCAN supporters could let us know now  if they'd like a place on the coach. Please contact us on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Once we get ideas of numbers, we'll confirm the arrangements here.

NATIONAL  CLIMATE  MARCH 2008

SATURDAY DECEMBER 6TH

Part of a Global Day of Action on climate, see  www.globalclimatecampaign.org  - last year 70+ countries were involved.

MARCH ON PARLIAMENT for the climate

The march this year goes to Parliament Square to demand that the government act now on climate.

Starts at 12 noon at Speakers Corner, Hyde Park

Climate protest bike ridestarts from Lincoln's Inn Fields at 10.30 am: and joins start of march later.  See  http://www.campaigncc.org/bikeride.shtml   .

Speakers will include Nick Clegg MP (leader, Liberal Democrat Party), Michael Meacher MP(ex-environment minister) Caroline Lucas MEP (leader, Green party), and George Monbiot.

For info about coaches or other transport from around the country to the march see http://www.campaigncc.org/local.html

To download the leaflet for the National March go to  http://www.campaigncc.org/resources.shtml

The March on Parliament has four main themes -
1) NO to a 3rd runway at Heathrow and the runaway expansion in aviation expansion.
2) NO new coal - no new coal-fired power stations as planned at eg Kingsnorth in Kent
3) NO to the expansion of agrofuels - with negative impacts on forests, the climate and world food supply.
4) YES to a renewable energy revolution and green jobs
Come with your own banners, costumes etc on one of these themes (if you fancy !) and join up with others pushing that theme......

The March on Parliament for the Climate marks the Saturday midway through the UN Climate Talks in Poznan, Poland and we make our demands on the UK government in solidarity with the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities that will suffer worst and most immediately from climate change caused overwhelmingly by the rich long-industrialised countries..

We need the government to act now on climate, to stop building coal-fired power stations and new runways - and to begin the renewable energy revolution. We need a tidal wave of people outside parliament to make them act to stop climate catastrophe now ! Be part of that tidal wave, be there ! Next year may be too late.

Why  so critical now ? See     http://www.campaigncc.org/whynow.shtml

Countdown to Copenhagen

Christian Aid is calling for people to pledge to a fair climate deal at the vital Copenhagen summit next year and to contact their MEPs. You can find out more here

The Greening Campaign

This is an innovative idea to help motivate people to reduce their energy consumption and therefore lower their personal and community carbon footprint. The campaign is the brain child of Terena Plowright, who was at the time centre manager at The Sustainability Centre, East Meon, Hampshire. Terena is hoping to bring the campaign to Portsmouth so have a look at what is involved http://www.greening-campaign.co.uk/About.html

Practical Action asks Gordon to make the link

Practical Action is launching a new campaign, calling on Gordon Brown to make the Link between Climate Change and World Poverty. In the year 2000, world leaders adopted the Millennium Development Goals with a target of halving world poverty by 2015. But in 2008 we are nowhere near achieving the goals. To make the situation worse, climate change is undermining what has been achieved so far. Much more urgent and ambitious action on climate change is needed right now if we are to succeed in combating poverty. For more information and to take action please visit www.makethelink.org.uk
