Tyndall Centre Deputy Leader, Dr Jim Watson has suggested the government should put restrictions on coal power station development in the UK. The Guardian reports there should be a cap of 500g per kWh on all new coal energy projects and that projects like Kingsnorth should not go ahead on the basis that carbon capture might be possible in the future.
New research from Texas A&M University using Nasa atmospheric water vapour data collected by the Aqua satelite, confirms the interactions between CO2 and water vapour in the atmosphere that are simulated in computer climate models. Water vapour is one of the primary green house gases.
Modern technology in the shape of the two GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satelites has enabled scientists in France to assess the rate at which sea levels are rising and what is responsible. For most of the last century, sea levels rose by 1.8mm, however since 1993 sea levels have been rising by 3.3 mm per year.
Anny Cazenave of LEGOS , Toulouse, says between 1993 and 2003, 50% of the sea level rise was due to thermal expansion and 50% due to land ice melting (glaciers, ice sheets).
However since 2003 about 80% is due to Greenland and Antarctic land ice melting whilst thermal expansion was a smaller contributing factor.
An environmental campaigner from Chichester has won a landmark victory against the government in a long-running legal battle over the use of pesticides.
The high court ruled that Georgina Downs, who runs the UK Pesticides Campaign, had produced "solid evidence" that people exposed to chemicals used to spray crops had suffered harm.
The court said the government had failed to comply with a European directive designed to protect rural communities from exposure to the toxins.
