UK emissions 2007
The latest emissions figures for the UK are released today. Net CO2 figures were 12.8% lower in 2007 compared to 1990.
Total percentage figures for the different sectors are:
40% Energy supply
22% Road transport
16% Business
14% Residential
Transport emissions increased by 11% whilst Energy and Business emissions are lower by 11% and 19% respectively from the 1990 base.
One can see that if it weren't for increased transport emissions we could have had a cut of some 30%.
The fact that transport emissions continue to rise, undermines the cuts made in other sectors and it also highlights one of the main strategies of the 'green movement', to focus on local development or 'localisation'.
Friends of the Earth also points out that international air and shipping traffic are not included. But another sector not included is the exported manufacturing base that once resided in the UK (we have effectively exported many of our emissions).
