Our Work
PCAN was born in November 06. Since then we’ve:
-
- Organised 6 Green Fairs. In 2011 we had over 100 stalls plus a pedal powered stage and cinema, a pedal powered hovercraft.....
- Held a Climate week in 2010 with films, cycle rides, art exhibitions, public lectures and work in schools
- Held a series of public meetings to decide policy
- Attended a range of local meetings to publicise PCAN and get people talking about Climate Change
- Developed our website and publicity materials including a Facebook page
- Produced PowerPoint presentations and exhibitions on going greener and on climate change around the world. Contact us if you'd be interested in using these.
- Circulated our ideas on carbon reduction and energy saving. For instance we hld a meetin in Nov 2010 on Zero Carbon Britain and 1 million Climate Jobs
- Lobbied local councillors and organised deputations to Full Council
- Persuaded Portsmouth City Council to agree to address the climate change agenda and allocate an initial annual budget of £100,000
- Persuaded the Council to set up a working group, the Portsmouth Sustainability Action Group (PSAG) comprising major stakeholders in the City. PCAN members regularly attend this and help to monitor the City's Climate Strategy with which we were heavily involved.
- Responded to national consultations like the Climate Change Bill and to local consultations like Portsmouth's Regeneration Strategy, the local Flooding Strategy, Portsmouth Travel Plan and the Local Transport Plan
- Set up a Green Living Exhibition which has been circulating around local libraries
- Organised groups to go on demonstrations like national climate marches
- Organised hustings of local candidates for local and general elections
- Met with local MPs to discuss climate issues
- Undertaken work in schools, including assemblies and Enterprise Days with an environmental theme. Also organised a children's art exhibition at the Lodge Arts Centre.
- Organised stalls at local events like the Hampshire Green Fair, Portsmouth University Freshers' Fair, the launch of Greening Portsmouth, the CTC National Conference, the Seaside without your car day and One World Week
- Held film nights with linked panel debates on the theme of climate change and one planet living. We've also provided panels at relevant film launches.
- Generated publicity in local papers and established links with Express FM on which PCAN supporters have been interviewed.
- Publicised relevant events organised by other organistions.
- We've encouraged local groups to take action. For instance lots of schools and community groups got involved with the Green Week inJuly 2010.
- Worked out ways of cutting our own carbon footprints and put these on our website
- Attended and reported back from national climate meetings.
