The Future of wind Power in Portsmouth
The ongoing campaign to save the Vestas wind turbine factory has highlighted the difficulty in finding sites for wind turbines. Vestas cited the lack of a UK market for wind turbines as a reason for closing the factory. Despite the urgent need to tackle climate change now, the government seems unwilling to take action to develop this market. Local authorities could help stimulate demand for wind turbines by identifying and publicising potential wind turbine sites. In Portsmouth for example there could be onshore and offshore sites which could be used to generate wind power. If all Local Authorities did this, the market for wind turbines is likely to grow. It could also help encourage private industry, or the government, to reverse the current trend and start investing in wind power manufacture. With unemployment looking set to rise to 3 million by the end of the year, we desperately need these green jobs. Scientific reports about climate change are indicating time is running out. Portsmouth City UNISON wants to start a debate over these issues.
