Tree Warden Scheme
Over the last three years HBC has been developing and expanding its Tree Warden Scheme with the help of Volunteer Co-ordinator Frances Jannaway and Emsworth Cllr Brendan Gibb-Grey.
The scheme has moved on from its organisation in name only to an active scheme where there are now twenty plus Tree wardens in various parts of the borough with the highest concentration being based in Emsworth and Hayling Island.
Tree wardens have been involved in different projects and events ranging from alerting HBC’s Arboriculturalist to trees at potential risk from being felled to undertaking tree walks in the community.
Training has been provided for the Tree Wardens covering topics such as TPO legislation and tree identification.
During 2006 the scheme was rewarded with a plaque for it commitment to trees at an event held in the House of Commons thus putting HBC’s Scheme firmly on the map nationally.
A recent event attracted seventy people from the borough and was covered in the local press once again highlighting the importance of trees and green spaces. Jon Stokes Director at The Tree Council, Frances Jannaway and Jamie Gargett each spoke at this event outlining different aspects of the scheme and HBC’s position and commitment to expanding developing things even further.
One area highlighted is that there is a lack of Tree Wardens in some areas of the borough and as such more will be done to expand the scheme to the ‘four corners of the borough.
