A new application that uses Google Maps shows just why Wind Farms and wind energy are so important to the UK. The FirstLook Wind map clearly shows the UK being the most wind rich country in the world. Taking a look at the colour chart, it is clear that many countries have average wind speeds well below 6 m/s whilst the UK has averages of 6 m/s and higher. As such it would be criminal not to exploit those resources.
It looks like the FirstLook Map is intended to offer a guide for anyone wishing to install a large wind turbine, there is also an option for solar energy as well, although that seems to need more work before it is usable. It also looks like the company intends to charge for wind/solar information in the future. They later intend to make more detailed data available for areas outside the US.
