You may have seen in the news that the government is trying to stop public bodies boycotting companies on ethical grounds - i.e. when they buy in goods and services they will not be able to refuse to deal with particular companies because of their involvement with tar sands, tobacco, the arms industry or countries with human rights abuses.
There is also a linked consultation out at the moment specifically on local authority pension investments. This would ban divestment from the UK arms industry or from particular countries (with a focus on stopping boycotts of companies operating within Israel's illegal settlements). We believe that this new approach is a significant threat to fossil fuel divestment as well as to the principles of local democracy.
This consultation ends on FRIDAY (19th). Several organisations have put together a joint e-action to allow you to submit a quick response. If you are able to spend a few minutes writing a response to the consultation in your own words (send to LGPSReform@communities.gsi.gov.uk) stressing the importance local authorities retaining the right of ethical investment choices and local decision-making, that would be even better. Please share widely with friends and networks - particularly those whose own pensions may be affected.
